Diana, Princess of Whales
Younger generations unfortunately will not understand how larger than life Diana really was and it would be difficult to describe. If you will read the book about her or go buy the audiotape you can play it for your children. Even having shared part of the human history with her in this period, I learned quite a bit about the real Diana and all the good she bought to the world. You will learn more and be able to pass on a true account of a larger than life character of the human endeavor. So I recommend to you: "DIANA-Princess of Whales, Queen of Hearts" By Geoffrey Giuliano. Very interesting Biography of her life and how she changed the way we all think. The book discusses her great efforts in the AIDS situation, drug abuse, Land mine efforts, poverty, and Homelessness. She never stopped bringing attention to the World's Problems and offering solutions through her charity work even after she was no longer the Princess. She was a great person and should be remembered as such. The People's Princess-that she was. She was a school teacher, a nanny, a philanthropist, a spokesperson for the world and a member of the elite royal family. She never forgot her roots, her people or her children. I recommend that every one learn more about her life so they can strive to achieve in their lives what she had taught by example. The book and the audio tape were both good as the audio also contained excerpts from many interviews in their own voices describing their associations with Diana including Tony Blair, Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Speaker of the House, Famous actors and many others. It is very interesting to see today in Afghanistan that they are talking on TV about Land Mines and actually covering in great detail the problem surrounding those land mines. Even more interesting was to watch as many landmine sweepers were loaded onto trains in the US and sent over there to help. It seems many of the things we do today and think about on a social level can be attributed to her life. Get the tape, share it with your kids and think on it. Imagine a child who lacks ownership of his own life, has noself-control, and lacks respect for others. If these were the qualities ofyour son, how would you feel for his future wives? Yes, wives is plural, this is one major reason we need to set boundariesfor our children their future. One study showed that children bornrecently on average will have more spouses than kids. Here are a fewexamples of children who lack boundaries: 1. Little Johnny walks right into his parent's bedroom whenever he wants.It does not matter if the door was open or closed.2. Without firm boundaries children are more likely to follow their peergroup. For example, making unwise choices on sex, drinking, or driving.4. Weak boundaries may make it hard to tell where we end and another personbegins. What is a parent to do? Many times we hinder our children from developingboundaries. Realize we must teach our children boundaries; they are notborn with them. Here are a few suggestions to help develop boundaries.1. Recognize and respect the child's boundaries. For example, knock ontheir closed bedroom door instead of just walking in.2. Set our own boundaries and have consequences for crossing them.3. Avoid controlling the child.4. Give two choices; this helps our children learn decision-making skills.5. When you recognize that boundaries need to be set. Do it clearly, do itwithout anger, and use as few words as possible.6. We need to say what hurts us and what feels good.7. It may be difficult to set a boundary. You may feel afraid, ashamed, ornervous, that's okay, do it any ways.Another way to work with boundaries and children is to model these for ourchildren.1. Recognize your physical boundaries.2. You have the right to request proper treatment, for example, poorlyprepared meals in a restaurant should be sent back, ask others to smoke awayfrom your space, and ask that loud music be turned down.3. Share your opinions with your children. Allow your children theiropinions. Opinions are not right or wrong. This will help them think forthemselves. 4. While most teachers are good at presenting information to a class, learning happens ONLY if kids actually want to learn. Teachers may have little time for individual work, and you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
And in many schoolrooms today a majority of the class see learning as not cool, with kids trying hard to not learn !
You may think that the school will tell you if your child is not learning, but you will probably be way wrong there.
School funding generally depends on the school saying how good they are at teaching children, so often they will say that all kids are doing fine even when many are learning nothing.
You may think that school inspectors will ensure that kids are learning well, but NO their job is only to ensure that teachers are teaching well.
So is your child learning nothing ? Well many parents today find out by setting their children their own school tests - as by using Math Sheets that come with the answers. It can be made an easy fun 5-minute daily game "let's play our 'my school test' game".
Not only will you then know that your child is learning, but you should find that you showing a little regular interest in their learning will increase their learning motivation strongly.
You can stick to maths sheets only, or can vary your mini-school-test to science or other subjects using questions from their schoolbooks. Just keep it brief so it does not become a chore for them.
If you show a little regular interest in your child's learning then they will want to learn, and will not follow anti-learning classmates.
Then when the school says that your child is doing fine, it will happen to actually be the truth!
